Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/txmn.tamu.edu\/blog\/2026-pollinators-for-texas-awarded-projects\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/txmn.tamu.edu\/blog\/2026-pollinators-for-texas-awarded-projects\/\">new funding from H-E-B <\/a>through the Pollinators for Texas initiative, the El Camino Real Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists plans to make free native seeds available at additional locations throughout Milam County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, called <strong>Sow &amp; Grow: Milam Seed Library<\/strong>, helps residents create natural habitats for bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the best part? The seeds are free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Can You Get Free Native Seeds in Milam County?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sow &amp; Grow program began in January 2025 at the Cameron Public Library. A second seed library was later established at the Milam Wildscape at <a href=\"https:\/\/birdandbeefarm.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/txmn.tamu.edu\/blog\/2026-pollinators-for-texas-awarded-projects\/\">Bird and Bee Farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently confirmed seed locations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cameron Public Library<\/strong> \u2013 304 E. 3rd Street, Cameron, Texas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Milam Wildscape<\/strong> \u2013 Located at Bird and Bee Farm near Milano, Texas. Check access arrangements before visiting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the new funding, the chapter plans to add two more locations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library<\/strong> in Rockdale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The wildscape near All Saints Episcopal Church<\/strong> in Cameron.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chapter announced plans to add the Rockdale location in September. However, current operating details for both new locations should be confirmed before visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seed quantities may be limited to ensure that more residents can participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are Native Plants Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Native plants are naturally suited to the climate, soil, and wildlife of Central Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once established, many native plants require less supplemental watering than nonnative landscaping plants. They can also provide food and shelter for wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their benefits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supporting native bees and butterflies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing nectar and pollen for pollinators.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating habitat for beneficial insects and birds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping conserve water once plants become established.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adding natural beauty to yards and gardens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pollinators play an important role in our environment. Many plants depend on insects and other animals to help them reproduce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even a small patch of native flowers can make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Don&#8217;t Need a Large Yard to Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the nicest things about the Sow &amp; Grow program is that almost anyone can participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need several acres of land or an elaborate flower garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Native plants can be added to flower beds, planted along fences, or grown in a sunny corner of the yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rural property owners may have room for larger patches of native wildflowers and grasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even homeowners with limited outdoor space can provide valuable habitat by choosing suitable native plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fall Is a Good Time to Plant Many Native Wildflowers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fall is an excellent planting season for many Texas native wildflowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In nature, wildflowers drop their seeds onto the ground after blooming. The seeds remain in the soil through winter, and some species benefit from exposure to cold temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This natural process is called <strong>cold stratification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When spring arrives and temperatures rise, the seeds may begin to germinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some native plants take longer to establish.
