Two products you may have heard about are <strong>Capstar and Seresto collars<\/strong>. Both are used to control fleas, but they work in very different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here in Central Texas, fleas can be a problem for much of the year. Our warm weather gives them plenty of opportunities to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once fleas get established, getting rid of them can take some work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Capstar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar is an oral flea treatment for dogs and cats. Its active ingredient is nitenpyram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medication begins killing adult fleas within about 30 minutes. That makes it useful when an animal already has fleas and needs quick relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Capstar isn&#8217;t designed for long-term flea prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its effects are short-lived. It kills adult fleas on the animal, but it doesn&#8217;t eliminate flea eggs or larvae in the home or yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means new fleas can jump onto your pet after the medication has worn off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar is labeled for dogs and cats at least four weeks old and weighing at least two pounds. Be sure to use the correct product for your pet&#8217;s weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a Seresto Collar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/yourpetandyou.elanco.com\/us\/our-products\/seresto?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yourpetandyou.elanco.com\/us\/our-products\/seresto?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Seresto collar<\/a> is designed to provide longer-lasting protection against fleas and ticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike Capstar, which is given as a tablet, Seresto is worn around the animal&#8217;s neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collar gradually releases two active ingredients: imidacloprid and flumethrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These ingredients spread over the animal&#8217;s skin and coat to kill fleas and ticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the manufacturer, a Seresto collar can provide protection for up to eight months when used as directed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are separate collars for cats and dogs. Always choose the correct version and follow the label instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Someone Might Consider Both Products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar and Seresto serve different purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar provides fast treatment for adult fleas already on an animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seresto is intended to provide ongoing protection against fleas and ticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone dealing with an active flea infestation, that difference can be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, using both products together should be discussed with a veterinarian first. Your pet&#8217;s age, weight, health, and other medications all matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About Safety?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No flea treatment is completely free of risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar can cause side effects, including vomiting, itching, or temporary increased scratching. Pet owners should read the label and contact their veterinarian if unusual symptoms occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pets\/seresto-pet-collar-review?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pets\/seresto-pet-collar-review?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Seresto collars<\/a> have also received considerable attention because of reported adverse reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency reviewed reports involving Seresto collars. The agency allowed the products to remain registered but required additional safety measures and reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, the EPA&#8217;s Office of Inspector General raised further concerns about whether the agency had adequately assessed potential risks to pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reported problems have included skin irritation, hair changes, and, less commonly, neurological symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collar itself can also present a mechanical hazard if it becomes caught on something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pet owners should watch their animals closely after putting on a new collar. If an adverse reaction occurs, remove the collar immediately and contact a veterinarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These concerns are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">worth discussing with your veterinarian<\/a> before choosing a flea prevention product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Handle Fleas at Our House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here at our place in Central Texas, we use both Capstar and Seresto collars on our dogs and cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we notice fleas on one of our animals, we use Capstar to kill the adult fleas quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For longer-term protection, we put new Seresto collars on our animals in March or April. That&#8217;s when we&#8217;re getting ready for the warmer months and the fleas that come with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve found that fleas aren&#8217;t much of a problem around here in November and December. So we usually don&#8217;t replace the collars until the following March or April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important thing to understand is that Seresto collars are labeled to provide protection for up to eight months, not a full year. Our replacement schedule reflects our own experience with seasonal flea activity. It doesn&#8217;t mean the collars continue working throughout that entire period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flea activity can vary from year to year, and some pets may need protection throughout the winter. It&#8217;s best to discuss an appropriate prevention schedule with your veterinarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Forget the House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treating your pets is only part of controlling a flea infestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae can be present in carpets, furniture, bedding, and other areas where pets spend time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regular vacuuming helps remove fleas and flea debris. Pay special attention to places where your animals sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wash pet bedding regularly, following the fabric&#8217;s care instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may need to continue cleaning for several weeks. Newly emerging fleas can appear even after treatment begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an infestation is severe, ask your veterinarian or a qualified pest control professional about additional treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who has battled fleas knows they aren&#8217;t particularly considerate houseguests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They move in without an invitation, bring the whole family, and apparently have no intention of paying rent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, there are several ways to help protect our pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capstar offers a way to kill adult fleas quickly. Seresto collars provide longer-term flea and tick control.
