Buckholts firefighter Rick Fuentes is being remembered throughout Central Texas following a tragic accident that claimed his life on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Rick Joseph “RJ” Fuentes was just 26 years old. He was a volunteer firefighter, a middle school teacher, a coach, and an active member of his church.
He devoted much of his young life to helping others.
Now, communities throughout Milam and Bell counties are coming together to honor his memory.
A Tragic Loss While Answering an Emergency Call
On Sunday, October 11, Fuentes was responding to a vehicle and grass fire near Holland, Texas.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, he was driving a Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department truck when the vehicle left FM 437 and overturned.
Fuentes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
It is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks emergency responders face, even before reaching the scene of a fire.
A Young Man Who Dedicated His Life to Others
Fuentes was more than a volunteer firefighter.
He was also a science teacher and coach at Lamar Middle School in Temple.
His students and fellow teachers remember a young man who cared deeply about the people around him.
Temple Independent School District released a statement expressing its sadness over his death.
The district described Fuentes as a beloved member of the Lamar Middle School family. School officials said he had made a positive difference in the lives of students and staff.
Counseling and other support services have been made available to help the school community cope with the loss.
Fuentes was also a graduate of Texas A&M University and Cameron’s C.H. Yoe High School.
Although his life was short, he had already touched many lives.
His Faith and Commitment to His Community
Fuentes was an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Cameron.
He served his church in several ways, including helping with youth religious education and participating in worship services.
Friends and church members have described him as kind, faithful, and always willing to help.
He also served alongside family members in the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department.
His cousin, Alex Rodriguez, is the department’s assistant fire chief. His uncle serves as fire chief.
Fuentes had been a volunteer firefighter for a little over a year.
In that short time, he became an important part of the department.
For the people who knew him, his willingness to serve was simply part of who he was.
Central Texas Comes Together to Honor Rick Fuentes
On Wednesday, October 14, firefighters, law enforcement officers, family members, and residents gathered to honor Fuentes.
An escort accompanied him from Temple through Buckholts and on to Cameron.
Fire trucks and patrol vehicles lined the procession route.
Residents stood along the roadway. Some removed their hats or saluted as the procession passed.
The escort traveled past the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department before continuing to a funeral home in Cameron.
It was a moving tribute to a young man who had given so much to his community.
A memorial has also been established outside the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department.
Family members have invited those whose lives were touched by Fuentes to leave flowers there.
Remembering the Importance of Volunteer Firefighters
In rural communities like those throughout Milam County, volunteer fire departments provide an essential service.
These firefighters respond to grass fires, house fires, vehicle accidents, and other emergencies.
Many have regular jobs and family responsibilities. Yet they make themselves available when their neighbors need help.
They train, maintain equipment, and answer emergency calls because they care about their communities.
Rick Fuentes was one of those volunteers.
His death is a painful reminder that serving others can come at a tremendous personal cost.
It is also a reminder of how much we owe the men and women who volunteer to protect our communities.

A Life Remembered Through Service
Twenty-six years is far too short a lifetime.
Yet Rick Fuentes accomplished something that many people spend their entire lives hoping to achieve.
He made a difference.
He helped protect his neighbors. He taught and encouraged young people. He served his church and supported his family and friends.
The people of Buckholts, Cameron, Temple, and surrounding communities will remember him for much more than the accident that took his life.
They will remember the way he lived.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the Fuentes family, his fellow firefighters, his students, and everyone whose life he touched.
May Rick Joseph “RJ” Fuentes rest in peace.
