Rockdale trash violations have increased sharply, according to a recent city code enforcement report. During September 2026, Rockdale issued 84 trash notices. That’s a significant increase from just one notice during September 2024.

City officials are working to address improper trash disposal and property maintenance concerns.

For Rockdale homeowners, this is a good time to review the city’s rules. Getting rid of an old mattress, couch or other large household item may require more than putting it beside the curb.

Fortunately, the city provides several disposal options.

Rockdale Reports a Sharp Increase in Trash Notices

At the October 6 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, code enforcement staff reported 84 trash notices issued during September.

The report also identified 129 trash cases during the fiscal reporting period.

Staff discussed ways to improve enforcement and resolve violations more quickly.

These measures include issuing citations, sending formal notices and arranging cleanup when property owners fail to comply.

The city may also recover cleanup costs through property liens when permitted by law.

The goal is to address neglected properties and improve neighborhood conditions.

Why Can’t You Leave Furniture at the Curb?

It’s easy to assume that an old couch or mattress will disappear on regular trash collection day.

Unfortunately, that’s not how Rockdale’s trash service works.

The city contracts with BVR for weekly residential trash collection.

Regular collection does not include large household items such as mattresses, couches and other bulky furniture.

These items require special arrangements.

In a September 2 announcement, the city reminded residents that leaving bulky items at the curb can result in code enforcement action.

How to Dispose of Large Items in Rockdale

Rockdale provides two options for disposing of bulky household items.

Option 1: Schedule a Special Pickup

Residents can arrange for BVR to collect large household items.

According to the city’s September announcement, the cost is $35 per item.

To schedule a pickup, contact Rockdale City Hall.

Phone: 512-446-2511

This can be a convenient option when you have one or two large items to remove.

Option 2: Take a Load to the Public Works Facility

Residents can also pay to dispose of a pickup or trailer load of accepted bulky waste.

The disposal location is:

Rockdale Public Works Facility
301 Mill Avenue
Rockdale, Texas

The city’s published fees are:

Load TypeFee
Level pickup truck load$32
Pickup truck with sideboards$63
Single-axle trailer$43
Double-axle trailer$87

Residents must pay at City Hall before taking their load to the facility.

The city’s garbage collection page lists weekday drop-off hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

Proof of city residency is required.

It’s a good idea to confirm current fees and hours before loading your truck.

Some Items Cannot Be Accepted

Not everything can go into the city’s bulky waste disposal system.

Rockdale lists several prohibited materials, including:

  • Electronics
  • Paint and chemicals
  • Hazardous waste
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Appliances containing Freon
  • Construction debris

These materials may require special recycling or disposal arrangements.

If you’re unsure about an item, call City Hall before taking it to the disposal facility.

That can save you an unnecessary trip.

What Happens if You Ignore a Trash Notice?

Rockdale’s September 2 announcement explains the enforcement process for large items left at the curb.

Property owners are given 10 days to remove and properly dispose of the items after receiving notice.

If the items remain, the city may hire a contractor to remove them.

The property owner can then be billed for the cleanup.

If the bill remains unpaid after 30 days, the city says a lien may be placed on the property. Additional fines may also apply.

These consequences can make improper disposal much more expensive than arranging a special pickup.

Watch for Rockdale’s Free Bulk Disposal Events

There is another option worth remembering.

Rockdale and BVR provide special bulk disposal events during the year.

The city schedules two Stash Your Trash Days and two Bulk Item Pick-Up Days annually.

During these events, eligible residents can dispose of certain bulky items at no charge.

Accepted materials and event rules may vary.

The city posts dates and details on its website.

If you’re planning a major household cleanup, checking for one of these events could save money.

A Few Tips for Keeping Your Property in Good Shape

Most homeowners don’t deliberately create a trash problem.

Sometimes an old appliance stops working. Furniture gets replaced. A garage cleanup produces more unwanted items than expected.

Before you know it, there’s a pile waiting to be hauled away.

Here are a few ways to avoid problems.

Plan before replacing furniture. Find out how the old item will be removed before the new one arrives.

Don’t leave bulky items at the curb. Arrange for a special pickup or approved disposal.

Keep household trash contained. Use your regular collection cart and follow the city’s collection rules.

Take care of outdoor clutter. Don’t allow unwanted items to accumulate around your home or yard.

Check disposal rules before starting repairs. Construction debris may require a different disposal service.

Watch for free disposal events. They can be a convenient way to clear out unwanted household items.

A little planning can prevent a much bigger problem later.
